Ron is the owner and manager of Tortuga Bay.
When asked about how he got into scuba, Ron replies “I grew up around water, Garden City, Kansas”. Ron then explains that Garden City had the distinction of having the World’s Largest, Free, Municipal, Concrete Swimming Pool. It was literally a man made concrete lake, large enough to water ski in. Ron learned to swim at a very early age and would spend the majority of his boyhood summer days at that pool.
Ron took a job in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1973. In the early 1980’s, Ron got his first taste of the ocean and snorkeling while vacationing in Hawaii. He found he just couldn’t stay under water long enough to see all he wanted to see so upon returning to Colorado he looked around to see if anyone taught scuba diving. Little did he know at the time that Colorado has the largest population of scuba divers, per capita, in the United States. Ron got his Open Water Diver certification soon afterward. A few years later Ron was trying to figure out how he could do more diving in Colorado. Having run the training department at his place of employment he developed a liking for training. Ron decided to put training and scuba together and in 1988 became an Open Water Scuba Instructor. Shortly after earning his OWSI rating an opportunity to buy into a scuba dive center presented itself and Ron found himself fully entrenched in the scuba business. In 1999, Ron had an opportunity to leave corporate America and started Tortuga Bay in Greeley, Colorado.
Ron continued his professional level training and earned the rating of Instructor Certifier with Scuba Schools International (SSI), Instructor Trainer with Scuba Diving International (SDI), Instructor Trainer with Technical Diving International (TDI) and Course Director with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI).
Today, Tortuga Bay is Northern Colorado’s only PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Center. Ron is the onsite PADI Course Director and Tortuga Bay offers training from snorkeling through all the professional levels as well as public safety diving.
